None of these drivers that are being singled out have any medical issues that would impair their driving a motor vehicle on public road and are not any different then those who pay their DL renewals on time. As of the end of August, there were 62 confirmed suicides among active duty soldiers and Guard and Reserve troops called to active duty, officials said. Another 31 deaths appear to be suicides but are still being investigated. If all are confirmed, that means that the number for 2008 could eclipse the 115 of last year — and the rate per 100000 could surpass that of the civilian population, Col. Eddie Stephens, deputy director of human resources policy, said at a Pentagon news conference. “Army leaders are fully aware that repeated deployments have led to increased distress and anxiety for both soldiers and their families,” Army Secretary Pete Geren said. “The Army is committed to ensuring that all soldiers and their families receive the behavioral health care they need,” he said in a statement distributed at the press conference on National Suicide Prevention Week starting Sunday. “Installations and units across the Army have been directed to redouble their efforts in awareness and prevention training and soldier care and support services,” Stephens said. Apr 09, 2010 Army major charged with shooting 13 people to death at Fort Hood, Texas, in November has been moved to a jail in Bell County, Texas, a deputy said Friday. Maj. Nidal Hasan was severely wounded by police in the shootings and had been hospitalized at the Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio. Hasan’s lawyer said his client was paralyzed from the waist down and will likely never walk again. Jail records show that Hasan was booked into the jail early Friday. Fort Hood is in Bell County. “Nidal Hasan is here,” Deputy David Burhnam of the Bell County Sheriff’s Department said. Hasan, 39, has been charged with 13 counts of premeditated murder, 32 counts of attempted murder and will face trial in the military’s legal system. The November 5 shooting spree killed 12 soldiers and one civilian. More than 30 others were wounded. Hasan, a licensed Army psychiatrist, was scheduled to deploy to Afghanistan as part of a behavioral health support team a few weeks after the shootings took place. Military records show Hasan received his appointment to the Army as a first lieutenant in June 1997 after graduating from Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia, with a degree in biochemistry. The IRD-PATH group aims to find a technological solution to help decrease morbidity and mortality due to pneumonia in newborns and children up to 24 months old in Karachi, Pakistan. With a worldwide incidence of more than 150 million cases per year, pneumonia kills more children under five years of age than any other disease. Although more recent figures have shown improvements in estimates of deaths, the global burden of deaths due to pneumonia remains unchanged. The United Nations (UN) has established a goal to reduce the mortality rate of children under five by two-thirds as one of their eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), to be completed by the year 2015. RD-PATH is interested in studying the effects of vaccination by identifying and tracking patients suffering from pneumonia. To accomplish this goal, IRD-PATH plans to enroll 7500 newborns in a pneumonia surveillance study. Karachi’s health care system does not support patient identification and tracking, however, making patient tracking a difficult technical challenge for the study. Newborns are seen by different physicians in tens of clinics, and there is no location for medical records. In addition, since health centers (clinics and hospitals) are understaffed, physicians have to see a large number of patients in a short period of time (at the extreme, a physician may see one patient every two minutes) and may not have time to report every pneumonia case through some lengthy procedure.
