New Electronic Medical Records Device Can Save Lives in an Emergency

San Diego, CA (PRWEB) April 24, 2007

A recently released computer application called Med Records to Go™, that stores electronic medical records, can help reduce errors in emergency conditions, as well as in hospital or medical clinic admissions. Introduced by the Vital Record Corporation in November, 2006, Med Records to Go™ uses flash drive technology to record and store health information for emergency viewing by medical personnel. In addition, the portable application can transfer electronic medical records from the small storage unit to a standard cell phone for emergency reference.

“The Institute of Medicine published a report ‘To Err Is Human, Building a Safer Health System’ (IOM 2000) in which the institute estimated that up to 98,000 patients may die each year because of the mistakes of doctors, nurses, and other hospital workers,” says Roy Whittington, Director of Vital Record Corporation. “Few published studies, however, have quantified or described injuries to patients that occur prior to reaching the hospital. Med Records to GoTM can reduce the number of errors by providing instantaneous health information about the patient and that could end up saving lives.”

Med Records to Go™ provides direct access to a person’s health information, including such information as identification, medications, doctors, caregivers, insurance carriers, and family history. Other medical disclosure information is also provided, such as DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) orders, living and testamentary trusts and wills. For positive identification, a digital photograph of the owner may be recorded as part of the medical data.

When medical personnel plug the portable storage unit into a computer through a common USB port, the health information is automatically displayed using the computer’s installed Internet browser application. All health information is in web page format. Additionally, no Internet connection is required since all health information, application software, and controls are privately stored in the portable unit.

Emergency medical personnel have immediate access to the health information by browsing the various pages of medical data. No special application knowledge is required to view the data because a standard Internet browser is used. As an option, the health information can be stored on a cell phone and subsequently displayed using key selection available on the phone.

Because all software, controls, and electronic medical records are contained in the thumb-sized unit, the health information is kept private and secure and not vulnerable to access on the public Internet. For additional security, the medical data stored in the device is encrypted and cannot be read using any other application.

No external power is needed to maintain the contents of the storage unit. Since the unit is small, it can be carried, worn around the neck, or placed on a key chain.

An additional feature of Med Records to Go™ is the transmission of electronic medical records from the storage unit to a standard cell phone. A temporary Internet connection is required to send the medical data in encrypted form to the Vital Record Corporation server before placement on the cell phone. In addition to medical data encryption, user identification and password controls are used for storing and retrieving the medical data from the corporate server.

The application manager software of the cell phone is used to retrieve and install a special cell phone application available on the server. The special application is used to store and display the medical data on the cell phone. Once the medical data is successfully stored on the cell phone, the data is automatically removed from the server.

To use this added function, the cell phone must have Internet access capability to retrieve the medical data. The cell phone must also support Java applications known as Midlets.

The passage of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) has ensured that the role of behavioral health in the overall health care system will change. Now, it is more important than ever to know how health care reform will affect you and your role and the role of states, behavioral health care providers, and consumers. Due to the breadth of the new law, ACA sets forth concepts that are new to many individuals and families that currently or will receive mental health and addiction services. Recognizing the importance of understanding these new concepts, SAMHSA is hosting a fall webinar series. This webinar covered how health care reform will affect the role of states, behavioral health providers and consumers; what is considered a health home; what services are provided in a health home setting; and which states are currently using health homes. Evidence-based approaches for people with co-occurring disorders and the role accountable care organizations will play was also discussed. The webinar is part of SAMHSA’s Health Care Reform Webinar Series. More information about the series can be found at www.samhsa.gov Information on SAMHSA’s Health Care Reform Initiative can be found at www.samhsa.gov

Medical Transcriptionists CareerSearch.com

Career Search Medical Transcriptionists Medical transcriptionists listen to dictated recordings made by physicians and other health care professionals and transcribe them into medical reports, correspondence, and other administrative material. They generally listen to recordings on a headset, using a foot pedal to pause the recording when necessary, and key the text into a personal computer or word processor, editing as necessary for grammar and clarity. The documents they produce include discharge summaries, medical history and physical examination reports, operative reports, consultation reports, autopsy reports, diagnostic imaging studies, progress notes, and referral letters. Medical transcriptionists return transcribed documents to the physicians or other health care professionals who dictated them for review and signature or correction. These documents eventually become part of patients permanent files. To understand and accurately transcribe dictated reports, medical transcriptionists must understand medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, diagnostic procedures, pharmacology, and treatment assessments. They also must be able to translate medical jargon and abbreviations into their expanded forms. To help identify terms appropriately, transcriptionists refer to standard medical reference materials—both printed and electronic; some of these are available over the Internet. Medical transcriptionists must comply with specific standards that apply to the style of

View the full Interactive Tutorial at: www.phgfoundation.org Legally, as society has become more litigious, a valid consent is beneficial to protect both parties. A person could accuse a healthcare professional or researcher of trespass or assault if the person did not give their consent or if their consent was not voluntary. If the person is not sufficiently informed of the possible consequences of their decision and they suffer as a result, they could accuse the healthcare professional or researcher of negligence. Therefore, through the UK common law and healthcare legislation, informed consent is a requirement in most treatment and research settings. However, consent goes beyond legitimising actions that would otherwise be unlawful. There are differing opinions about the strong reliance now placed on informed consent. In treatment settings, is it ever possible to inform someone sufficiently on the complexities of a surgical procedure or a treatment regime so that a person really understands the implications of their decision? I must know everything about what I can expect before I can make a decision. This information is too complex and too confusing to understand. Ill do what the doctor wants. Theyre the expert. Some people, when faced with complex descriptions or multiple pages of information to join a clinical trial, simply sign consent forms without properly reading or trying to understand the information. I want all the information available on this procedure so

(Rehab 911) Physicians Who Practice Mad Medicine….

Rehab 911 is calling on America to comprehend this post, a most regrettable post with a true and accurate account of professional medical physicians, hospitals, assisted by The Joint Commission investigator in Tallahassee Florida; disrepect for a patient to a degree that it lead to their decision to set off a series of radiation treatments that was as lethal as an atomic bomb drop on Japan. To assure this patient “Larry D. Cornelius” that he was dealing with a cascade of bullies they all set course with numerous accounts of disruptive behaviors, bully tactics, picking at and on; worse of all, laughing at what they were doing as though they were successful at destroying a American War Veteran. These unethical medical practices at this hospital and its physician who took the medical Oath to heal the sick and the elderly; what has become apparent they also took a private personal Oath better known as the kevorkian Oath for money/power, to kill or totally debilitate Larry Cornelius of Tallahassee Florida on the account of his refusal to except chemo-therapy, the therapeutic treatment that results in certain death regardless of it so call promise of healing. Therefore, Rehab 911 is calling on Americans to help with this one as the world respond’s to this attack real “premises”; to “MILK Medicare and Medicad” and the taxpayers for thousands of dollars until Larrys death. Its question time: If Dr. kevorkian was sentence to prison for pulling the plugs on Americans who willingly
