New Electronic Medical Records Device Can Save Lives in an Emergency

San Diego, CA (PRWEB) April 24, 2007

A recently released computer application called Med Records to Go™, that stores electronic medical records, can help reduce errors in emergency conditions, as well as in hospital or medical clinic admissions. Introduced by the Vital Record Corporation in November, 2006, Med Records to Go™ uses flash drive technology to record and store health information for emergency viewing by medical personnel. In addition, the portable application can transfer electronic medical records from the small storage unit to a standard cell phone for emergency reference.

“The Institute of Medicine published a report ‘To Err Is Human, Building a Safer Health System’ (IOM 2000) in which the institute estimated that up to 98,000 patients may die each year because of the mistakes of doctors, nurses, and other hospital workers,” says Roy Whittington, Director of Vital Record Corporation. “Few published studies, however, have quantified or described injuries to patients that occur prior to reaching the hospital. Med Records to GoTM can reduce the number of errors by providing instantaneous health information about the patient and that could end up saving lives.”

Med Records to Go™ provides direct access to a person’s health information, including such information as identification, medications, doctors, caregivers, insurance carriers, and family history. Other medical disclosure information is also provided, such as DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) orders, living and testamentary trusts and wills. For positive identification, a digital photograph of the owner may be recorded as part of the medical data.

When medical personnel plug the portable storage unit into a computer through a common USB port, the health information is automatically displayed using the computer’s installed Internet browser application. All health information is in web page format. Additionally, no Internet connection is required since all health information, application software, and controls are privately stored in the portable unit.

Emergency medical personnel have immediate access to the health information by browsing the various pages of medical data. No special application knowledge is required to view the data because a standard Internet browser is used. As an option, the health information can be stored on a cell phone and subsequently displayed using key selection available on the phone.

Because all software, controls, and electronic medical records are contained in the thumb-sized unit, the health information is kept private and secure and not vulnerable to access on the public Internet. For additional security, the medical data stored in the device is encrypted and cannot be read using any other application.

No external power is needed to maintain the contents of the storage unit. Since the unit is small, it can be carried, worn around the neck, or placed on a key chain.

An additional feature of Med Records to Go™ is the transmission of electronic medical records from the storage unit to a standard cell phone. A temporary Internet connection is required to send the medical data in encrypted form to the Vital Record Corporation server before placement on the cell phone. In addition to medical data encryption, user identification and password controls are used for storing and retrieving the medical data from the corporate server.

The application manager software of the cell phone is used to retrieve and install a special cell phone application available on the server. The special application is used to store and display the medical data on the cell phone. Once the medical data is successfully stored on the cell phone, the data is automatically removed from the server.

To use this added function, the cell phone must have Internet access capability to retrieve the medical data. The cell phone must also support Java applications known as Midlets.

Electronic Medical Record Software Upgrade Saves Doctors Time, Money

Port Charlotte, FL (PRWEB) May 4, 2006

MedicalCharting.com, a leading reseller of electronic medical record software (EMR software), announced a complete redesign of the popular Charting Plus program, used by over 3,400 medical practices in the United States and Canada, would go on the market today. The new electronic medical record software, MediNotes e, includes several powerful upgrades.

“This program is such a marked change from the Charting Plus electronic medical record software that we felt it was necessary to sunset that name and begin a brand new campaign focused on our future as a company,” said Harry Selent, CEO and President of MedicalCharting.com. “The ‘e’ in MediNotes e stands for everything that is important to our clients: efficiency, ease of use, empowerment, and enhanced care.”

The upgrade includes a major reworking of the original Charting Plus electronic medical record software structure, as well as several new features. MediNotes e is now a multi-tasking shell with the ability to launch multiple components as tabbed screens within the shell. The electronic medical record software can display the Practice view, the Patient view for several patients, an Active Note window, and the Document view simultaneously. Care providers and staff can quickly toggle between patients or tasks without the need to navigate to a completely separate area of the program, saving them valuable time and allowing unprecedented access to clinical information.

The newest features of the electronic medical record software include:

a patient tracker, allowing front office staff to monitor patients who have been checked in, how long they’ve waited, and which room they have been assigned to

customizable worklists, for situations when a series of ordered events involving multiple clinicians is necessary

MediNotes Rx, an ePrescribing tool built right into the prescription dialogs used in MediNotes e that includes drug to drug and drug to allergy interactions, formulary checking, and full ePrescribing capabilities through SureScripts and RxHub

“We’re seeing the same evolution now with electronic medical record software we were seeing in the 1990s when voice dictation was first getting off the ground in the medical field,” said Selent. “The quality of patient care is increasing as information is current, readily and instantly accessible by the medical care team, and organized and legible for all to read. This translates into increased quality of care for patients of doctors using electronic medical record software.”

Dr. Blum of North Carolina, who has used MediNotes e and Charting Plus electronic medical record software for a number of years, said, “Before going electronic our staff would stay over for 45 minutes at the end of the day for filing. We are now saving 10 hours a week on filing charts. And the staff can devote their time to better patient care instead of ‘paper care.’ They get to go home on time, and we are saving the cost of overtime.”

A Patient’s Life Story on Electronic Medical Records Software

A Patient’s Life Story on Electronic Medical Records Software

In November 2004 the FDA approved the use of RFID tags (Radio-frequency identification) At the rate computer technology is evolving it takes some imagination to picture how digital advances will change health care in the coming years. The economic and socio-political climate trends indicate that the future could be less than idyllic. In the future health care information could be kept in a centralized databank with the complete rundown of a person’s identity; this means that whoever controls the data controls the medical, financial, and privacy issues of the individual.

Thinking back to the days of playing Pong on a simple text computer, large and primitive by today’s standards, no one would have guessed we would someday have nearly the total information of the world available on a tiny cell phone. Miniaturization has been the trend as microchips get smaller and more powerful. Industries like health care can obtain software that gets ever more sophisticated to consolidate medical records. The next step regarding the patient will be even more revolutionary. The advent of nanotechnology presents a world of opportunity, as it provides the capability to insert nanometer-scale microchips into the body to perform electronic functions.

Making hand motions or moving the eyes may be the way we interface with the systems of the future at some point. Just as electrodes and RFID chips are used on the exterior, it is also possible to use the technology internally. You would think that implanting such a chip would be done with limits of use under the law, which it is at the time of this writing. With many laws changing overnight and runaway centralization, it would only take a new law to require citizens to have radio frequency identification chips placed in their arms which would serve as their bar codes.

The RFID chips currently in use are injected into a patient’s arm; they don’t carry medical data on their own but when scanned they provide access to the databank where the records are on file. Greater technological progress will mean that a person’s history can be followed, giving a temptation to consolidate more data into those chips. Research indicates that just such a plan is underway with the goal of having all medical records, financial records, criminal records, and so on to be available to the authorities.

Methods of keeping electronic medical records will likely follow the trend of accelerating technology to the point of making it intrusive. It is inevitable that the ease of managing an inventory of the population will not go unnoticed by governments in search of methods of easy control. Medical publications presented the results of a survey done in February 2005 of 253 Chief Information Officers and Directors of Information Systems at healthcare facilities (The 2005 Leadership Survey). The healthcare software survey indicated that 55% of them considered auto-identification as the IT solution that was most important to their institutions. The importance would be considerably higher in military and political circles.

The march of progress goes on but there are two possible futures, either one of enlightenment where patients can count on new miracles of modern medicine to help the living or a future of an Orwellian nightmare where a totalitarian bureaucracy that can turn off your chip when it is displeased – sort of a big cable company. Another type of chip has been developed that is so tiny it fits on the end of a syringe and can attach itself to the cortex of the brain. It would be capable of altering brainwave frequencies to make the subject either docile or violent. The potential for abuse is obvious and we can only hope that privacy remains intact throughout the political power-grabbing.

Electronic Medical Records ? An Important Process in Computerization of Healthcare Facilities

Electronic Medical Records ? An Important Process in Computerization of Healthcare Facilities

Electronic medical records are central to computerized health information systems. It helps the healthcare professionals and administrators to bring about high levels of efficacy and professionalism in their work. This paperless technology is crucial to achieving peak performance in other areas of medical operations such as decision support systems. They are important to help deliver high quality, efficient and cost effective healthcare solutions to all sections of society.

Document conversion services are available for healthcare services, hospitals and medical institutions, which can help them manage their patients’ documents better. Existing records can be easily scanned to the new electronic medical records repository after which the records are updated by using the solution that best suits the organization and their requirements.

Electronic medical records companies have the necessary technology and expertise to help your organization convert your records into electronic format in any type of situation. They are immensely helpful and central to improving the efficacy and performance of your organization. By using the right type of services, the technology can help medical professionals capture data at the very onset of treatment procedures and integrate them from various internal and external sources. It also helps the physicians speed up their decision making process due to clarity and ready availability of the desired information.

Electronic medical records is extremely useful in promoting greater safety, providing better quality and making the health delivery process infinitely more effective. Document scanning is the process used to convert data from a paper document to its electronic image. Clarity and accuracy is ensured during the conversion process. Blank images are erased and relevant images are de-speckled and de-skewed to get a final product superior in quality.

Apart from major space saving advantage, there are other key advantages of using an electronic archival system for storing medical records. They are safe from fire and theft or from any natural disaster. Make copies of the records and store them at multiple locations to provide access to various departments. Unlike paper documents, creating copies and storage of electronic medical records is a simple, fast and affordable process. Despite the best protection possible, paper deteriorates over time. Records stored in electronic archives can survive decades without the slightest decline in quality if proper maintenance procedures are followed. They are highly cost effective and do not entail blocking valuable space for storage.

Conversion of medical records from paper to electronic archive systems is a specialized process and requires a high degree of expertise and access to state-of-the-art document conversion tools. Service providers must be technically equipped to provide the highest quality service at affordable rates.

Electronic medical records are central to computerization of healthcare services. It is important to use the services of professional electronic medical records companies to improve the efficacy and image of healthcare service providers.
